Tips--Functional finishes for high-performance apparel
Nonwoven fabric consists of fibers or filaments randomly attached or bonded together in the form of mats (Fig. 6.5). There is a wide variety of nonwoven processes. The processes basically consist of extruded fibers or filaments deposited or laid on a conveying surface in a dry, quenched in air, wet or molten state (also called dry-laid, wet-laid, or spun). The web formation phase of nonwoven manufacturing processes transforms fibers or filaments, together with or thermoplastic resins or films, into layers of loosely arranged networks (e.g., webs, mats, or sheets). Mechanical, thermal, and fluid mechanisms are used to achieve the preferred fiber orientation in the web and bonding of the fiber. Nonwoven fabric possess limited mechanical strength, poor handle, drape, and elongation due to the low weight and poorly arranged and bonded fiber characteristics, which makes it ideal for disposable and less durable light-weight applications such as in the medical and technical fields.
